Psychological Assessment

What is Psychological Assessment

What is Psychological Assessment?

A psychological assessment is a structured analysis that we conduct to understand your mental health. We use standard tests, questionnaires, and several observational methods for this procedure. Through psychological assessment, we collect data about your thinking capacities, personal qualities, emotional stability, and the way you behave in general situations.

Psych assessment is not just a set of performed tests or solved questionnaires, but an entire framework designed to evaluate how you function mentally and emotionally. Our goal is to identify your capabilities, challenges, and needs. This evaluation helps us thoroughly interpret your mental fitness and suggest recommended therapies if needed.

How is Psychological Assessment Conducted?

Our experts carry out your full psychological evaluation using two types of resources. These include tests along with assessments.

During assessment, our experts usually conduct an interview or ask you to perform certain activities to gauge your mental health condition.

Mental State Examination

This is a formal evaluation to analyze your behaviors, emotions, and overall cognitive abilities. You are mainly examined in the following aspects:

  • Your appearance.
  • Your facial expressions.
  • How you behave.
  • The way you speak or move.
  • Form and content of your thoughts.
  • Your insights, whether you agree or disagree with a particular narrative.

Behavioral Assessment

We observe your actions and responses under various circumstances to judge your behavior. You can be directly observed while performing a specific task or through a formal interview. We also use rating scales and checklists to analyze your behavioral patterns qualitatively.

Cognitive Assessment

This is a brief test often used as a screening tool to examine your memory, attention, and thought process. It uses various assessment screens such as the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) or Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Both these processes take approximately 10 minutes to complete and provide a quick overview of potential cognitive impairments. You may be asked to undergo further neuropsychological tests in case you screen positive for these tests.

Types of Psychological Assessment

Standardized tests include all the formal questionnaires, checklists to be marked, or activities to be performed. We use norm-referenced tests (NRT) as a standard protocol. This means that these procedures are uniform for all, irrespective of where you live or who is conducting your tests.

Intelligence Test

It measures your general cognitive capabilities and your level of intelligence. It examines your vocabulary, comprehension, mathematical problem-solving skills, logical thinking, attention, and memory.

Personality test

It determines certain traits related to your personality which comprise your core values, decision-making, conscience, preferred social interactions, willingness to new experiences and stress response.

Neuropsychological tests

These tests provide an in-depth review of your intellectual functioning and thought processing. They are especially vital in confirming cognitive impairments or brain injuries.

Direct observation tests

In these tests, you perform a particular task, and our experts observe how you complete this assigned task. This test provides us with real-time information on your behavior and conduct.

Vocational tests

It evaluates your passion and interests.

Do’s and Don’ts Before Going For Psychological Assessment

Many of you might think of a psych assessment as a test you need to pass. It’s not a straightforward multiple-option examination you’re appearing for. Our psychologists use information from a diverse range of standard questionnaires to finalize a clear-cut diagnosis. Remember that fabricating your answers just to increase your psychological assessment tests during your evaluation is not a good idea. This will lead to a misdiagnosed result of more than one mental health issue.

You should be honest and open about your mental health issue to get it treated well.

It is better if you prepare yourself for a few things before appearing for the assessment, which may include:

  • Bring any necessary documents with you.
  • Make a list of the questions you want to ask your psychologist on the day of assessment.
  • Precisely noting each of your psychological symptoms.
  • How often and how long do these symptoms keep happening to you.
  • Avoiding the use of alcohol or other recreational drugs before the day of assessment.
  • Going to sleep earlier and making yourself calm.

FAQs

01

Do I need to go alone for the psychological assessment?

This depends on your comfort. It’s perfectly fine to attend alone, but you can come along with a trusted friend or family member who can support you if you’re nervous or anxious about your evaluation.

02

How long will it take?

Psychological assessment can span from a few hours to a few weeks. It depends on the complexity of your mental health issue.

03

How soon can I get my results?

You may not get your results right away. Psychologists need time to process the findings of your tests before giving any final verdict. This might require a week to a couple of months. You should stay patient and not rush to any conclusive judgment. You can reach out to your psychologist for an estimated timeline.

04

Will my assessment results remain confidential?

Yes. Your assessment results are completely confidential and are only shared with authorized personnel, that too on your informed consent.

05

Are psychological assessments covered by the insurance policy?

Psychological assessments that are tied to some medical conditions are generally covered by an insurance policy. If you are asked to get psychologically assessed for career counselling, educational evaluation, or legal proceedings, insurance policies might not cover such requests.

She is compassionate, and sincere, listens intently and is always able to calm me and help me focus and get the most from my treatments. Dr Kazi has been available whenever I need help. She is on top of my care and aggressively monitors my progress. I came to her suffering major depression and overall a mess. Any issues I've experienced with billing have been handled gracefully and with patience; the staff are very easy to talk to and are understanding. I LOVE PA Hofer; she (and other staff) are always very quick to answer online Portal questions, are very flexible with visits, understand when it comes to medication costs/changes, and go the extra step when it comes to evidence-based practice.
