Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI)

What is the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI)?
Personality assessment inventory (PAI) is a self-assessment questionnaire that we use to assess a broad range of personality traits and diagnose any psychopathological conditions one might have. The PAI also directs us to plan accurate treatment strategies for your mental health condition. At Mid Cities Psychiatry, we offer you reliable personality assessment inventory testing that provides qualitative analysis of your mental health.

How is Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) testing conducted?
The PAI test constitutes a well-organized questionnaire. It is designed to determine multiple aspects of your personality and psychological functioning. Our team of experts can guide you in undertaking the test at the facility, or you can complete the PAI online test at your convenience and submit your responses to us.

Why Do You Need to Undertake PAI Testing?
We recommend PAI testing if you display marked signs of personality disorders or psychological issues. They can be the following:
- Extreme mood changes, e.g., feeling very sad and hopeless or overly excited and happy
- Being overly anxious or stressed for no reason
- Expressing impulsive and reckless behavior
- Engaging in manipulative and deceitful action (antisocial behavior)
- Exhibiting repetitive, intrusive thoughts or compulsive behaviors
- Thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideations
- Other unusual symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, etc.
Besides, PAI testing is also helpful in:
- Tracking the effectiveness of currently administered therapies.
- Assisting in legal proceedings and forensic reports to find criminal offenders
- Occupational psychology to assess the personality traits of employees as part of pre-employment screening

What information is Gathered in PAI Testing?
PAI comprises 22 scales that are indicators of your personality type and cover 4 categories as follows:
Validity scales
These scales help validate whether the responses you provided during the test are accurate and trustworthy. Validity scales provide the confidence that your results are actual reflections of your psychological status and not just an overly positive or negative mental state presentation.
Clinical scales
Clinical scales are particularly helpful in directing the diagnosis to specific mental health issues. Each clinical scale identifies a set of symptoms related to a particular psychiatric disorder, e.g., depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc.
Treatment considerations scales
While you undertake the PAI, treatment scales assist us in planning a management strategy that is most effective for your mental health condition. Results of the treatment scale pinpoint how you might respond to certain treatments.
Interpersonal scales
These scales help us better understand your interactions with others. You are assessed across 2 scales:
Dominance measures your assertiveness; how you take charge of situations in a social context versus how meek and submissive you are.
Warmth measures how affiliative you are in relationships versus your coldness and rejection.
PAI Scoring
You should always have your PAI test score interpreted by a qualified professional. The final PAI test score depends on each of its constituent scales. For example, a high score on depression or mania scales may indicate mood disorders. Similarly, if you get a high rating on the inconsistency (ICN) validity scale, it may suggest inconsistent answers to test responses. Each included scale is interpreted separately to indicate specific personality traits, which are then analyzed collectively to reach a conclusive decision. However, we do not make a final, definitive diagnosis without further psychiatric evaluation.
